Boom pump stabiliser

Also called Concrete pump stabiliser, Concrete pump outrigger

The outrigger legs a truck-mounted concrete boom pump extends to spread its footprint and support the reaction loads generated while pumping, similar in principle to a crane’s outriggers. Because boom pumps can impose high, sustained point loads while stationary for long pours, their stabiliser pads often need the same ground protection as crane outriggers.

In practice

A boom pump differs from a crane in duration and in rhythm. It stands in one position for hours rather than minutes, and the boom moves continuously through the pour while the pumped concrete pulses through it — so the ground under the feet is loaded, unloaded and reloaded for the whole pour. Ground that holds under a first application can work soft under that repetition.

Where it matters on site

Set-up position is usually chosen for reach into the pour rather than for ground, and it is frequently at the site edge — near an excavation, a retaining wall, a footpath or a kerb line, which is exactly where the ground is least able to take a concentrated foot. Distance from any excavation matters as much as the pad size, and where a pump is set up near an edge, that is a temporary works question rather than a driver’s judgement.
